Recurrent Themes of Divorce

Helping families of divorce requires a continual assessment of multiple themes which recur for many years as children mature into adulthood. While adults divorcing without children may actually "recover" and "move on" from divorce in a few years, divorced parents are tied to their past through their children. They continue to need to react to the changes in their children's behavior as they re-visit these issues at different developmental stages.

--Adjustment to the divorce

--The schedule of time of each child with each parent

--Mechanisms for maintaining contact with both parents

--The "wheres and hows" of transitions and handovers

--Financial support issues

--Responsibilities for future financial obligations

--Access of the extended family to the children

--Access of both parents to school records and events

--Access of both parents to medical information

--Refusal to see a parent

--An understanding of the agreement

--Home responsibilities

--Adult dating
